Project Narrative

Scaffold Resource was selected as a key partner in the ongoing restoration of the renowned Washington National Cathedral’s organ. This iconic project presents a unique challenge: ensuring safe, efficient access to the organ, which is being disassembled, restored, and reassembled for the first time in 50 years.

Given the intricate nature of the restoration, our team designed a comprehensive access solution that blends engineering excellence with aesthetic considerations. In collaboration with Rose Brand, we concealed our robust scaffolding using their innovative fabric, which transformed the construction site into a visually harmonious environment that allowed Cathedral activities to continue without disruption.

Key Features

  • Custom Access Platform: Scaffold Resource designed and installed a 59-foot-long by 41-foot-wide scaffold platform, positioned 45 feet above the Great Choir. The platform is anchored securely to the Cathedral’s existing structure, ensuring stability throughout the restoration process.

  • Concealment & Aesthetics: The scaffold structure was elegantly concealed by Rose Brand’s fabric, which maintained the visual integrity of the space, offering a graceful, unobtrusive backdrop for ongoing Cathedral events.

  • Safety-Enhanced Design: The platform includes a parapet wall for lateral debris containment and visual concealment, contributing to a safe and organized workspace.

  • Integrated Hoist System: A cable hoist bay was incorporated into the design, allowing the efficient removal and reinstallation of the organ’s facade pipes. This ensured precise handling of the delicate components.

  • Lighting Solutions: Temporary lighting was embedded within the scaffold structure to ensure adequate visibility and safety during work, seamlessly blending into the project’s design.
