Project Narrative
Scaffold Resource is proud to be a key partner in the historic restoration of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, an iconic symbol of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and a beacon of maritime heritage. Our involvement in this significant project underscores our commitment to preserving national treasures and ensuring their integrity for future generations.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, designed and constructed in 1868-70, stands as the tallest traditional lighthouse in the United States. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, it holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors. The lighthouse was famously moved inland in 1999 to protect it from coastal erosion, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to preserve its legacy.
As part of the major repair project funded by the National Park Service, Scaffold Resource was entrusted with the crucial task of providing and installing scaffolding for the lighthouse’s exterior and interior. Our team delivered over 70 truckloads of scaffolding to the site for the comprehensive renovation of the Lighthouse, meticulously planning and executing the installation process to accommodate the unique challenges posed by the lighthouse’s structure and location.
The scaffolding, comprising an impressive 28 deck levels and reaching a height of over 200 feet, was carefully constructed to provide safe and efficient access for the restoration work. Installation began on February 19, 2024, and continued through the end of March and into early April.
Celebrating the successful installation of three levels, the recent arrival of a crane further empowers us to navigate the heights, reaching new milestones as we contribute to the remarkable transformation of this iconic structure.
Our efforts played a critical role in facilitating the restoration work, which includes repairs to deteriorated masonry, metal components, windows, marble flooring, and the lantern. The project also aims to restore important architectural components, such as missing pediments over the windows and interior doors, and apply new paint coatings to both the interior and exterior of the lighthouse.
Scaffold Resource takes pride in contributing to the preservation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a project that not only safeguards a piece of maritime history but also enhances the visitor experience for the hundreds of thousands who come to admire this historic landmark each year. Our commitment to excellence and safety ensures that the lighthouse will continue to stand tall and proud for many years to come.
